The Project Document “Upgrading the Value Chain of Medicinaland Aromatic Plants- Access to Export Markets” has been signed by the EgyptianMinistry of Trade and Industry, the Swiss State Secretariat for EconomicAffairs and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. The projectaims to upgrade the medicinal and aromatic plant sector and its manufacturedproducts in order to increase competiveness of Egyptian exports oninternational markets, increasing income and creating job opportunities atevery step of the supply chain and falling in line with the framework of theGovernment of Egypt to develop those industrial sectors bearing greatereconomic potential.

The Agriculture and Agro-industries Technology Centeraffiliated to the Technology and Innovation Council will execute the project incooperation with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization(UNIDO), falling under the strategic objectives of the Ministry of Trade andIndustry aiming to link production and export as well as its strategy toincrease Egyptian exports. The project will be executed in coordination withseveral Technology and Innovation Centers, such as the Food Technology Center,then National Cleaner Production Center as well as the Egyptian Ministry ofAgriculture and Land Reclamation, with financial contributions of the privatesector, increasing efficiency of members of the supply chains, specifically inproduction and value addition.

The objectives of the project are: Improving productivity,quality and compliance to TBT/SPS requirements throughout the supply chain;strengthening SME capacities in product development and value addition forexport growth and diversification; and enhancing position in export marketsthrough coordinated efforts on enforcing compliance criteria, branding andpricing strategies. The project also foresees the establishment and thetechnical support of service centers, assuring their sustainability, inproximity of production conglomerates in four governorates of Upper Egypt,namely Minya, Beni Sueif, Fayoum and Assyout.

The project will be funded by the Swiss StateSecretariat for Economic Affairs, with a budget of USD 2.87million inaddition to in kind contributions of the Government of Egypt. The projectobjectives correspond to the policies of the Swiss Government to supportsustainable economic development though effective partnership with the EgyptianGovernment. The project also match to the objectives of the United NationsIndustrial Development Organization, which include the upgrade of theindustrial sector in developing countries and countries in transition inaddition to building industrial community for development on regional andinternational level.
